Bought a New Home? What You Need to Know About Those Trees in the Yard

When you buy a new home, you may have some landscaping changes in mind. Your first step regarding your yard, however, is to find out the names of the species of the shrubs and trees and to have the trees evaluated. That nice tree you see could harbour problems and need removal.

Invasive and Aggressive Species

Invasive species crowd out native species, and aggressive species can grow so fast that the roots can affect your home's foundation. Once you move in, you need to have a tree service evaluate all trees in the yard, and you need to find out the species' names. Have any invasive trees removed and consider having aggressive trees taken out, too, such as those that are very close to your house.

Branches Hanging Over the Roof

A stately tree providing plenty of shade in the yard is something that many people would love to have on their property. However, if those branches hang over the roof of the house — not just some twigs and leaves, but heavy branches — then your house is in trouble. The branches can fall during storms and cause major damage to the home, and the proximity of the tree to the roof can easily spread fire. If you have twigs and branch tips next to your home, those can be trimmed back. But if a tree is right next to the structure with branches overhead then it needs to be removed, if possible.

Hidden Health Problems

Trees may look healthy on the outside, but they can have health issues inside. If a tree is dying and you start to see evidence of that externally (fungi growing on the tree, and so on), then it's a safe bet that the tree's health is already very bad. Those trees may need removal because a dead tree in your yard is a major hazard. You never know if that dead tree will fall over or start dropping limbs unexpectedly. The reason for the tree dying is of concern as well because a pathogen can spread to other trees. If the tree died due to a virus or insect infestation, you might have to remove adjacent trees as well. Of course, if the tree was merely old and is past its known life span, then adjacent trees should be unaffected.

Tree removal isn't something you take lightly, and if you can leave the tree in place, that is beneficial as the tree provides shade. Removal is something that's necessary in some cases, however. Speak with a tree service to ensure all the trees you have are ones you can keep. A tree removal company can provide further information.
